Beam Suntory launches exclusive whisky for Indian market

Spirits company Beam Suntory, a part of Japan’s Suntory Holdings Ltd, has launched an India specific whisky, Oaksmith created by Shinji Fukuyo, chief blender of Suntory using traditional Japanese craftsmanship. The drink made only for the Indian market will use Scotch Malt whiskies and American Bourbons to suit the Indian palate. Japanese whiskies Yamazaki Distiller’s Reserve and Hibiki Japanese Harmony and Roku Japanese Craft gin have also been launched.

The House of Suntory brands are being launched across all major cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Bangalore. “The growing premiumisation of the Indian market and the appreciation for finely crafted spirits made this the right time to launch these brands,” said Neeraj Kumar, managing director of Beam Suntory India.

The Indian spirits market was valued at Rs 1.84 trillion in 2016, according to data from consumer research firm GlobalData. Whisky accounts for more than 60% of this figure and single malts make up a small part of the same.
